چکیده

Monitoring of the arterial condition promises an advantage in detection of any abnormalities occurred among diabetic patients. In this study, the characteristic of photoplethysmogram (PPG) has been investigated non-invasively to measure the status of arterial stiffness. A total of 101 Type 2 diabetic patients, aged 50 to 70 year were participated in this study. The patients divided into two groups which Group 1 consist of patients with HbA1c<8% and those with HbA1c>10% is in Group 2. An area under curve (auc-PPG) has been investigated and chosen as PPG parameter. An independent sample t-test used to compare an auc-PPG between two levels of HbA1c which are HbA1c<8%(Group 1) and HbA1c>10%(Group 2). The result shows that auc-PPG has been found significantly higher among diabetic subjects with HbA1c<8% than those with HbA1c>10% (Group 1 (M=0.455, SD=0.068), Group 2 (M=0.403, SD=0.067), p<0.0001). Further analysis is carried out to investigate the effect of age on auc-PPG. As a result, the mean values of auc-PPG is still significantly higher among diabetic patient with HbA1c<8% than those with HbA1c>10% (Group 1 (M=0.453, SD=0.009), Group 2 (M=0.405, SD=0.009), p<0.0001). The auc-PPG could be considered as one parameter in determining the status of arterial stiffness in relation to the level of HbA1c. Aging Index using Photoplethysmography for a Healthcare Device: Comparison with Brachial-Ankle Pulse Wave Velocity

OBJECTIVES Recent studies have emphasized the potential information embedded in peripheral fingertip photoplethysmogram (PPG) signals for the assessment of arterial wall stiffening during aging. For the discrimination of arterial stiffness with age, the brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) has been widely used in clinical applications. The second derivative of the PPG (acceleration photop...

Noninvasive Radial Pressure Waveform Estimation by Transfer Functions Using Particle Swarm Optimization

-Waveforms of blood pressure contain very important signals of life. Although blood pressure can be continuously measured by an intra arterial catheter, this invasive method introduces risks to patients. Knowing that blood pressure can change in just a few seconds or minutes without a sensible feeling, the waveforms of blood pressure are capable of conveying substantial cardiovascular informati...

Utility of second derivative of the finger photoplethysmogram for the estimation of the risk of coronary heart disease in the general population.

BACKGROUND Increased arterial stiffness has been shown to be associated with coronary heart disease (CHD). However, it remains unclear as to whether the second derivative of the finger photoplethysmogram (SDPTG), a non-invasive method for the assessment of arterial stiffness, is useful for the estimation of risk of CHD in the general population. METHODS AND RESULTS The SDPTG in 211 subjects (...

Feasibility and characteristics of arterial stiffness measurement in preschool children

Background Arterial stiffness is an important predictor of cardiovascular risk in adult life. Increased arterial stiffness can also be present in children and may be associated with several other cardiovascular risk factors. Until now, however, we know little about measuring arterial stiffness in preschool children. In this study, we assessed the feasibility of measuring arterial stiffness in p...

Effects of safflower seed extract on arterial stiffness

Safflower seed extract (SSE) contains characteristic polyphenols and serotonin derivatives (N-( p-coumaroyl) serotonin and N-feruloylserotonin), which are reported to inhibit oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), formation of atherosclerotic plaques, and improve arterial stiffness as assessed by pulse wave analysis in animal models. The effects of long-term supplementation with SSE on art...
